3 Ways to Bring Healing to Your Lineage

It is believed that when we heal ourselves, the healing ripples out to touch not only our descendants but our ancestors as well.

It is a traditional Lakota belief that our healing reaches both forward and backward for seven generations.

Through the study of epigenetics, modern science has proven that not only biological genes are passed down from parent to child, but we also pass down intergenerational emotional, mental, and spiritual trauma.

So, why heal ancestral trauma?

On the simplest and most tangible level, it allows for the blessings, wisdom, and protection of our thousands of ancestors to manifest in our lives. Beyond that, it also puts our ancestors at peace -- and it ensures that future generations do not suffer from the same patterns or wounds that we have lived with, sometimes for thousands of years.

Women in our lineages were likely unable to be spiritual healers, for fear of being outcast or persecuted as witches... today, we are able. And with that comes a level of responsibility.

Now is a potent time to bring healing to our lineages — and, thankfully, we have ancient wisdom from traditions all over the world to inspire us in how to do so, in right relation with our own ancestral heritage.

If you are reading this, chances are that you feel a calling to put an end to the ancestral trauma that is manifesting in your family, life, and lineage. You may want to draw a line in the sand, and say…

It ends here.

Here are 3 Ways to Bring Healing to Your Lineage:

1. Gather stories about your ancestors from your elders, find where ancestral patterns are manifesting in your life, and make changes.

If you have elders, sit with them. If not, strike up a conversation with a family member. See what patterns appear in your family, including areas such as relationship trouble, beliefs around money, health conditions, and luck. Then, once you have identified an ancestral pattern, reflect on how this pattern or energy is manifesting in your personal life. Once you do, make small changes through a series of easy-to-take actions. This way, you are working to break the pattern. As you do this work and make these changes, set an intention for the healing to be for more than just yourself -- and feel it rippling back to your ancestors and forward to your descendants.

2. Create an ancestral altar.

This can be as simple as leaves, feathers, candles, or crystals on a sacred space dedicated to honoring your ancestors. If you have photos of your ancestors, place them on the altar. This is a space for sitting in reflection, journaling, telling stories about your lineage, expressing gratitude for your ancestors, and speaking to your ancestors who are healed and well for guidance and connection.

3. Create boundaries with your ancestors that are not yet healed.

This is an important practice that instantaneously creates a safe space for your healing. Not all of the living are healed and well — many are unwell. The same applies to our ancestors. When we call in our ancestors, we want to be sure that we are only allowing our healed ancestors into our space. This is one of the meditations I guide my clients through as preparation for 1-on-1 Ancestral Healing. Setting boundaries with our unwell ancestors creates a safe space for healing. This practice alone can shift LOTS of ancestral patterns currently manifesting in your life.

We pass down intergenerational emotional, mental, and spiritual trauma from parent to child. Ancestral healing heals the cycle.
